Starting from Athens we drive westwards along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf to the Corinth Canal. We make a short stop to admire and make photos of this great canal that connects the Aegean and Ionian seas. See 'Diolkos' a marvel of ancient Greek ingenuity and engineering; this first global instrument track is a corridor to cross the Isthmus invented by ancient Corinthians.
Shortly thereafter we arrive at the ancient town of Corinth where St. Paul lived for two years and established a church, sending from here the two famous epistles that are part of the New Testament. In ancient times, Corinth stood out as one of the most prominent and richest cities. Your guide will tell you the history and mythology of Corinth, the town where Jason and Medea lived, as you visit the remains of the huge Agora (market place) and the Temple of Apollo dating back to 6th century B.C.
The tour continues as we reach Acrocorinth. This impressive fortified acropolis was occupied from archaic times till the 19th century. Visit the temple of Venus at its highest point and cherish the breath-taking view.
Return back into the center of Corthin to see the church of St. Paul, patron of the city of Corinth. The church built in 1932-34 based on the architecture of Aghia Sophia Church in Istanbul. Enjoy some free time to walk and shop in the town. The tour continues with a short stop at the site of the ancient port of Cehries where St. Paul disembarked.
We can arrange lunch during this excursion, at a traditional Greek tavern overlooking the Corinth Canal or at a beach-front restaurant ideal to enjoy fresh fish. We return to Athens following the same route and drop you off at your hotel.
